The future stars of class of 2016 made their debut on the state-level stage at the 2012 Massachusett Middle School Track Championships at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on June 9th. With the weather significantly improved over the 1st annual meet last year, records were broken in 22 of the 28 events. Athletes were limited to two event entries. There were many noteworthy performances summarized in the state champion table below.

On the girls side, Melissa Solomon of Diamond Middle School (Lexington) won the 200m and 400m dash in 26.59 and 1:01.04. David Cusack of MontainView MS (Wachusett) ran 24.61 to win the 200m while Mandela Franciscon of RJ Grey won the 400m in 54.61. One Last Lap around the Track

The rushed blog post on the Newton vs. Weymouth meet focused on the meet-determining photo finish in the boys 400m, but Peg Larkin writes about the more important picture in today’s Tab (see article).

The full gallery of that afternoon is now posted. The Newton North girls have a tradition of running a victory lap after their last home dual meet (interrupted for a few years when they didn’t have a home track).

Weston Twilight Invitational: Brendan Sullivan clears 16 feet!

The Weston meet yielded a lot of great photos but given the lighting conditions they are taking a bit of work to process, but figured this should get out first. A big highlight of the meet was Westford Academy’s Brendan Sullivan clearing a meet record and USA#26 16 feet in the pole vault in dark and chilly conditions.

By the time Brendan was done jumping, the pole vault box area was just a dark abyss. See below for a slide show of shots of girl’s winner Steph Brown from Newton North along with Brendan’s successful clearance of 16 feet and then attempts at 16’6″.

You can also see these photos in the Weston Invitational Pole Vault Gallery. A few blurry ones but difficult to focus camera in the dark!
